Kate Dimmock [d.4.3]

Kate Dimmock was the third child of William Dimmock & Mary Ann Peacock born August 26th, 1870 & christened October 30th, 1870 at the Abbey, St Albans, Herts.

In 1871 Kate, her older brother & sister & parents were living in St Albans where her father was a gardener & her mother a hat maker.

Kate was still at home with her parents in 1881& living at New England St, St Albans as were her older brother Alfred & sister Ellen.   Her grandfather, Thomas Peacock, was living with the family at the time of the census.

Kate married Sydney Charles Lawrence, an ostler, on January 5th, 1891 at Christ Church, St Albans.  Witnesses at the wedding were Kate's sister, Ellen Dimmock, Ernest John Mitchell & Henry Hilliard. Sydney was born April-June 1869 at St Albans & christened September 20th, 1874 at St Peter’s, St Albans, the son of Eliza & David Lawrence, a butcher.

Shortly after their marriage Kate & Sydney were living at Bardwell Road, St Albans & Sydney was described as an ostler.

In 1901 Kate & Sydney were living at 100 Albert St, St Albans where Sydney was a domestic coachman & Kate was a straw hat sewer working from home.  They had 3 children  - Sidney (5), Edith (8) & Amelia (known as Millie) (3).  They also had a 17 year old boarder, Fanny Kenning, a straw hat sewer.

By 1911 they had moved to 27 New Kent Rd, St Albans & Sydney (listed as Charles on the census) was now a painter (labourer).  Kate was described as a straw hat machinist as was daughter Edith who was still living at home.  Also at home were Sidney, a caterer’s porter (for a confectioner) & daughter Millie who was at school.  Fanny Kenning was still living with them.

Daughter  Edith married Thomas F Cooper, a bus driver, in 1915 in St Albans.

Sydney died in Jan-March 1926, aged 57, his death being registered at St Albans.

The 1939 register shows widowed Kate living at 2 Grimston Rd, St Albans.  She was living with daughter Amelia (Millie) & her husband Walter C Carter, an electric meter inspector.

Kate of 2 Grimston Rd, St Albans, died at Osterhills Hospital, St Albans on March 17th, 1953.  Probate was granted to son-in-law Walter Charles Carter, electrical meter inspector & her effects were £567.15s.6d.
